OBXwan is a state of the art, wide area Wi-Fi Internet access network deployed and managed by SkyeNet Wireless Communications, Inc. which functions in much the same way as cellular telephone systems do. All that is required to use OBXwan is a Wi-Fi enabled laptop, PDA or cell phone. No additional software is required.

Associate to one of our access points by using your device's Wi-Fi utility to "View Available Wireless Networks", select an OBXWAN node that gives you the best signal strenght and click "Connect". Your device should then connect automatically to our network, at which point, when you open a browser window (Internet Explorer, Netscape, FireFox, Mozilla, Safari, etc.) you will be automatically redirected to the OBXwan homepage. You will then be able to select and purchase a service plan that best suits your needs.

  OBXwan FAQs
  Q. I am within OBXwan's coverage area, but my computer does not list OBXwan as an available network.
A. Make sure your device has Wi-Fi enabled (turned on). Try using your device on the top floor of your vacation home - altitude always gets you better reception.

Q. Do I need to make any changes to my computers IP addressing configuration?
A. OBXwan is designed to work with any configuration you may have installed on your system. If your device can “see” our network, you can connect and start using it right away.

Q. HELP! Is there Technical Support available?
A. Tech support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - call us at 866-SKYENET (759-3638).

Q. How much bandwidth is available?
A. This depends on how far away you are from an OBXwan access point, but if you can connect to one of our access points, you will achieve speeds of AT LEAST 1 Mb/s which is similar to most DSL connections. A good connection should yield speeds of around 512 Kb/s to 1.5 Mb/s. Maximum rates are 2Mb/s from the internet (downstream) and 512Kb/s to the internet (upstream).

Q. What are your current rates for access?
A. OBXwan short term access is priced at $16.95 for 24 hours of access, $44.95 for 7 full days of access and $99.95 for 30 days of access. OBXwan is also available as a contracted service. A 12 month access contract is available for $30 a month and a 6 month access contract is available for $40 a month. Please feel free to contact us anytime at 866-SKYENET for more details.

Q. Is this similar to the Wi-Fi I have in my home/office?
A. It is exactly the same concept, just a whole lot bigger (depending on the size of your home of course).

Q. Can I receive network service EVERYWHERE inside the service area?
A. Unfortunately, there are gaps in our coverage area created by geography that we are working very hard to eliminate. If you own or manage a rental home in the area that you would like increased coverage for, please contact us.

Q. Does OBXwan support the Apple Mac?
A. Yes – we love Mac’s too!! As long as your Mac is Wi-Fi enabled and in range of our network (see coverage map), it should work just fine.

Q. OBXwan is a really odd name…what does it stand for?
A. Outer Banks (OBX) Wireless Access Network (wan) - rhymes with "pan".

Q. Is it safe to send my credit card information over the Internet?
A. Completely. All information is transmitted directly to Authorize.net – the worlds leading and safest credit card processing vendor. All communications to Authorize.net are performed using the highest standards in encryption and security protocols and is certified by VeriSign. Additionally, it is our policy to NEVER give any information out to any other organization. We will not sell your email address to anyone nor will we bother you with pesky e-mail messages (other than your receipt and system availability alerts).

Q. I have a laptop, but it is not equipped with Wi-Fi…what can I do?
A. Anyplace that retails computers or electronics should have Wi-Fi adaptors available.

Q. Where is The Outer Banks?
A. The Outer Banks (OBX) is in North Eastern North Carolina. It is one of the most beautiful vacation areas on Earth.

Q. Are there other areas in the Outer Banks where OBXwan is available?
A. New network nodes are added almost every week. Our current coverage area begins at the "end of the blacktop" in Northern Corolla in Ocean Hill Village and then extends south for 60 miles to Nag's Head.

Q. What’s this about cell phones?
A. Many cell phones are now Wi-Fi enabled. If you have one of these devices, it too will be able to connect to OBXwan and take advantage of our services.
